Low mood rarely announces itself clearly. More often it arrives as a slow flattening — things that used to matter stop mattering, rest stops restoring you, and the effort of appearing fine becomes its own quiet work. Many people carry this for months before saying it aloud to anyone, particularly when they are living far from home and the people who would normally notice.
Therapy for depression at BeyondBleu is a steady, confidential space to put that weight down and look at it properly — in English, with a therapist who takes both the low mood and the life around it seriously.
When people come to us
There is no single shape to depression. People contact us about:
- Persistent low mood, sadness, or a heaviness that does not lift
- Loss of interest or pleasure in things that used to matter
- Exhaustion that sleep does not repair
- Emotional flatness — feeling muted, distant, or “not really here”
- Harsh self-criticism, guilt, or a persistent sense of failure
- Changes in sleep, appetite, or concentration
- Withdrawing from friends, family, or colleagues
- Struggling to function at work while appearing fine
- The particular loneliness of feeling low in a country far from home
Some people arrive with the word “depression” already in hand. Others only know that something has dimmed. Both are good enough reasons to begin.
How we work
Our therapists draw on evidence-based frameworks — Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and depth-oriented psychotherapy — and fit the work to you rather than the other way around.
In practice this means two things happen alongside each other. There is practical work with the immediate weight of low mood: the patterns of thinking, the withdrawal, the days that have narrowed. And there is deeper work on what the low mood is connected to — loss, transition, long-carried self-expectation, or ways of living that stopped fitting some time ago. Symptom relief matters, and so does understanding why this arrived when it did.
We do not rush this, and we do not pretend it is linear. Progress in this work tends to look like colour returning gradually, not like a switch being flipped.
Low mood far from home
BeyondBleu works with international and intercultural clients across Japan and worldwide, and we pay particular attention to what living between cultures does to mood. Distance from family and old friends, a language that makes ordinary days effortful, workplaces with unfamiliar expectations, and the pressure to be grateful for an adventure that currently feels grey — these are real weights, and they are part of the work, not a footnote to it.
Sessions are held in English, Japanese or Italian, with clinicians who have lived this kind of mobility themselves.
Who this suits, and who it does not
This work suits adults whose low mood has persisted, returned, or begun to narrow their life, and people who want to understand what is happening rather than only manage it. It also suits people already taking medication prescribed by a doctor who want talking therapy alongside it — we work with that gladly, though we do not prescribe or advise on medication itself.
It is not the right care if what is needed now is urgent psychiatric treatment or crisis support. BeyondBleu is a private online practice and is not an emergency service. Where a different kind of care would serve you better, we will say so plainly.
Please do not wait for an appointment. In Japan, よりそいホットライン (Yorisoi Hotline) offers free, confidential support in English and other languages on 0120-279-338, and 119 is the number for emergency services. Reaching out there first is the right order of things; we will still be here afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a diagnosis before starting therapy?
No. You do not need a diagnosis, a referral, or a settled explanation of what is wrong. Many people begin therapy precisely because they want help understanding what they are experiencing. If at any point a formal assessment or a psychiatric consultation would genuinely serve you, your therapist will say so and help you think about next steps.
Is what I’m feeling depression, or just a difficult period?
That is often the question people arrive with, and it is not one you need to answer alone before booking. A difficult period that has gone on longer than it should, that is affecting sleep, work or relationships, or that is not shifting with rest and time, is reason enough to talk to someone. The first sessions are partly about understanding together what you are dealing with.
Can I have therapy if I’m already taking antidepressants?
Yes. Talking therapy and medication are often used alongside each other, and many of our clients do both. Your prescribing doctor remains responsible for the medication; our work with you is the therapy itself. We do not prescribe, adjust or advise on medication.
How long does therapy for depression take?
Honestly: it varies, and we will not promise a timeline. Some people feel movement within a handful of sessions; deeper or long-standing low mood usually asks for longer. What we can promise is that the work is reviewed with you openly, so you always know why you are there and what it is for.
Is it confidential?
Yes. Sessions are held one-to-one by secure video, and what you discuss stays within the clinical work, subject only to the standard safety limits that any qualified therapist works within — which your therapist will explain plainly in your first session.
