Therapy Costs in Japan
- All fees published
- No referral needed
- Online across Japan
- Payment at booking
Most people want to know the price before they know anything else. That is a fair question, and it should not take three emails to answer. Our fees are set out below in full, with the session length attached to each one, so you can see exactly what you would be paying for.
BeyondBleu works online across Japan and beyond, in English, Japanese and Italian. You do not need a referral and you do not need a diagnosis to begin. The same fees apply if you are joining us from Hong Kong — see our page on online therapy for Hong Kong.
Our fees
| Service | Session length | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Individual therapy | 50–60 minutes | ¥18,800 |
| Child and adolescent therapy | 60 minutes | ¥18,800 |
| Couples therapy | 90 minutes | ¥33,000 |
| Family therapy | 80 minutes | ¥40,000 |
| Neurocognitive and psychological assessment | 80 minutes | from ¥40,000 |
Assessment fees include the written report. There is no separate charge for it. The final assessment fee is confirmed at enquiry, once we know what the assessment needs to cover.
All fees are in Japanese yen. Payment is taken when you book.
If you are working out whether Japanese public health insurance will cover any of this, we have set out the rules in full in does health insurance cover therapy in Japan.
What the fee covers
The fee is for the session itself and for the work that surrounds it. That includes the clinician’s preparation, their note-keeping afterwards, and the thinking they do between your appointments. You are paying for a trained person’s attention, not for a room.
Couples sessions are 90 minutes rather than the usual hour. Two people need time to speak and to be heard, and an hour rarely allows both. Family sessions run to 80 minutes for the same reason.
Assessment is different again. An 80-minute appointment combines structured testing with a clinical interview, and you receive a written report you can give to a school or to a treating doctor. The report is part of the fee.
Why therapy fees in Japan vary so much
If you search for therapy in Japan you will see prices from around ¥8,000 to well over ¥40,000. That range is confusing, and it is worth understanding what sits behind it.
Broadly, the market divides like this.
¥8,000–¥15,000 per session. Counsellors and coaches without a formal clinical psychology qualification. Sessions are usually 50 minutes.
¥15,000–¥25,000 per session. Qualified therapists with general training. Sessions of 50 to 60 minutes.
¥25,000–¥40,000 per session. Clinically trained therapists with specialist training, such as the Gottman Method or Emotionally Focused Therapy, often working in longer formats.
¥40,000 and above. Advanced specialists, intensives, and multi-hour concentrated work.
Three things move a fee within that range: how long the clinician trained, how long the session lasts, and whether the work is offered in a language the clinician practises in fluently. A longer session with a specialist is not the same product as a shorter session with a generalist, and the price reflects that.
We have written about this in more detail for couples, with the ranges explained service by service, in our guide to couples therapy costs in Japan.
Insurance and payment
BeyondBleu is private pay. Japanese National Health Insurance covers medical consultation at a 心療内科 or 精神科 clinic. It does not cover private psychotherapy, so it does not cover sessions with us.
Some international and employer policies do reimburse therapy. If yours might, tell us and we will issue a receipt with whatever details your insurer asks for.
Payment is taken in Japanese yen at the time of booking. If your card was issued outside Japan, your own bank sets the exchange rate and any fee it adds.
Changing or cancelling a session
You can change or cancel a session without charge up to 48 hours beforehand.
Inside 48 hours, half the session fee is charged. A same-day cancellation, or a missed session without notice, is charged in full.
The notice period exists because that appointment was held for you and cannot usually be offered to someone else at short notice.
How many sessions will I need?
We cannot tell you a number before we have met you, and anyone who gives you one before they have is guessing.
What we can say is how the work usually shapes. The first session is largely about understanding what brought you and what you would like to be different. Towards the end of it we will say what we think we could usefully do together and roughly how often we would meet. Some people come for a short, focused piece of work. Others stay longer. You are free to stop at any point, and you are not asked to commit to a block of sessions in advance.
If we do not think we are the right people for what you are bringing, we will say so rather than book you in.

Working in your own language
All sessions are offered in English. Therapy is also available in Japanese and in Italian — say which language you would prefer when you enquire and we will match you with the right clinician.
Some people find it useful to work in the language a difficulty happened in, which is not always their first language. That is worth mentioning when you write.
You can see who you would be working with on our therapists page.
